A macOS app that provides a live Markdown preview for Apple Notes. LightMark runs in the background and displays a floating preview window that renders your Apple Notes content in Markdown format.

How It Works

  1. Launch LightMark - The app runs in the background with a menu bar icon
  2. Open Apple Notes - A floating "LightMark" button appears in the Notes window
  3. Click the Button - Opens a live Markdown preview window positioned next to Notes
  4. Type in Notes - Preview updates automatically every 2 seconds while Notes is focused

Installation

Requirements

  • macOS 12.0 or later
  • Apple Notes app
  • Accessibility permissions

Setup

  1. Download and launch LightMark
  2. Grant Accessibility permissions when prompted:
    • Go to System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityAccessibility
    • Enable LightMark in the list
  3. The app will show a status bar icon and is ready to use

Usage

Basic Usage

  • Open Apple Notes and start typing
  • Click the "LightMark" floating button that appears
  • The preview window will show your note content rendered as Markdown

Supported Markdown Elements

  • Headers (# ## ###)
  • Bold text (**bold**)
  • Italic text (*italic*)
  • Code blocks (`code`)
  • Lists (ordered and unordered)
  • Links and more

Privacy & Permissions

LightMark requires:

  • Accessibility Access: To read the focused text content from Apple Notes
  • No Network Access: All processing happens locally on your device
  • No Data Collection: Your notes stay private and are never transmitted

Troubleshooting

Preview Not Updating

  • Ensure Apple Notes is the active/focused application
  • Check that accessibility permissions are granted
  • Try clicking the floating button again

Floating Button Not Visible

  • Make sure Apple Notes app is running and focused
  • Restart LightMark from the menu bar

Permission Issues

  • Go to System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityAccessibility
  • Remove and re-add LightMark if needed
  • Restart the application
